What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery?
Oral and Maxillofacial surgery is a specialty that covers a broad spectrum of conditions that affect the mouth and face. It bridges the two disciplines of medicine and dentistry, and involves procedures that range from the removal of wisdom teeth to major head and neck resections for oral cancer to reconstructive surgery after facial trauma. Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons obtain both a medical degree and dental degree prior to undertaking a broad scope of surgical training, which is then followed by an intensive, four-year program of specialist surgical training.
Some of the areas in which Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons have unique knowledge and experience include:
removal of teeth, including wisdom teeth
placement of dental implants and various grafting procedures associated with implant placement
management of facial trauma including fractures of the forehead (frontal bone, naso-orbito-ethmoidal), eye socket (orbit), cheek-bones (zygoma) and jaws (mandible, maxilla)
diagnosis and treatment of cancer of the oral cavity
corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) for under- or over-bite jaw deformities, involving repositioning of the jaws
and management of a wide variety of conditions which affect the appearance and function of the face including the reduction or augmentation of the jaws, cheeks, and chin.

We have a small team who have been working together and within the area of oral surgery for many years. The combined experience base of the administrative and clinical staff is in excess of 50 years.
When you call to organise an appointment or follow up care - you can be assured that the person handling your call will have your best interests at heart.
Services
The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focuses on surgical procedures of the mouth and jaws.
From simple dental procedures such as surgical extraction of teeth and wisdom tooth surgery, to more complex orthognathic surgery where the jaws are moved in 3 dimensions to reposition them to correct a malocclusion (abnormal bite).
Both surgeons at Precision Oral Surgery, Tom Sunderland and Joseph Gunn, offer expert treatment across the full scope of procedures performed by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Patients are usually referred by General Practitioner dentists or doctors and other specialists such as orthodontists, prosthodontists and endodontists.
Procedures are carried out either in the rooms under Local Anaesthetic or in a hospital usually under General Anaesthesia (asleep) or with Intravenous Sedation. At Precision Oral Surgery we work closely with several Anaesthetists who provide the specialist anaesthetic care for all hospital based procedures.
